Finding Your Resilience

Resilience is our ability to cope with adversities we encounter in life and adapt to challenges or change. When we’re forced out of our comfort zones, it's important to remember that we are naturally equipped with the capacity to adapt to change and that resilience can be learned and strengthened.

Having resilience will help us overcome challenges in a healthy way and bounce back faster to lead fuller, productive and happy lives. Research shows that resilient people posses healthy coping skills, are self-aware, know what is important and meaningful to them and why, are optimistic and have strong relationships.

I encourage you to take a few moments to think about, and maybe write down the core strengths that you have, how you use them in your day to day and how they have served you in life so far.

If this is new to you, I encourage you to ask yourself if building resilience would be helpful to you in your life. We all have different coping styles and strengths so there is not one way to build resilience. However, there are a few strategies that have been found effective in helping people develop or improve resilience:

  • Taking care of yourself (physically, emotionally, spiritually)

  • Developing yourself (set goals, take risks, learn from mistakes)

  • Keeping things in perspective (learn to distinguish between things you can and cannot control)

  • Practicing problem solving

  • Strengthening your relationships

I will leave you with the wise words of Nelson Mandela who said “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

With care,

Alina
